SS Wave Hat

SS Wave Hat works well in wool, or a wool blend. The hat is worked as a modification of Slipped Stitches WAVES (400 knitting stitches, p166) giving the knitter something interesting to do, but keeping the texture simple enough for either gender. This may be considered an advanced beginner or intermediate pattern because you'll be working with two colors, just one per round, then slipping and twisting stitches. The pattern is offered with options for worsted, light worsted yarn, and in four sizes.  This hat takes just a few hours to knit, making the SS Wave Hat perfect for gifts or charity.

Finished sizes:

Adult: flat 16”, stretches to 22”circumference, height 9”

Child: flat 14”, stretches to 20”circumference, height 8”

Infant: flat 12”, stretches to 18”circumference, height 7”

Newborn: flat 10”, stretches to 16”circumference, height 6”

Gauge: 4.5 stitches = 1” Adjust needle size to match gauge.

Needles for hats: (Check the yarn label recommendations)

(Worsted) Size US #7, US #8, 16”, 12” circular needles, set size US#8, double pointed needles.

(Light/tight Worsted )Size US #6, US #7, 16”, 12” circular needles, set size US#7, double pointed needles.

Abbreviations: CO=cast on     K=knit k2tog=knit 2 stitches together    P=purl p2tog=purl 2 stitches together Rnd/s=round/s     sts=stitches     S=slip stitch purl-wise holding yarn to the back      M=main color    C=contrasting color    RC=right cross    LC=left cross

Special Stitches: (I prefer this RC, and LC)

RC = right cross = knit 2^nd stitch, leave on left needle, knit 1^st stitch, drop both stitches from left needle

LC= left cross= knit 2^nd stitch through the back loop, leave on left needle, knit 1^st stitch through the back loop, drop both stitches from left needle

Directions: Directions are written for size adult [child, infant, newborn directions are in brackets]. (Notes are in Italic)

Use the long-tail cast-on method, with the smaller 16” [16”, 12”, 12”] circular needles,

and cast on the number of stitches for desired yarn, needles, and hat size.

Place marker & join together by knitting first stitch being careful not to twist.

Brim: Continue with smaller needles,

Work the hat in pattern for 8” [7”, 6”, 5”] from CO ending on rnd 6 or 13.

For a taller hat, work extra rounds of the pattern before starting the crown decreases.

M Rnd 1: * K8, k2tog; repeat from * to end

C Rnd 2: Knit

C Rnd 3: * P1, k3, p3, p2tog; repeat from * to end       (C Rnd 3: * K7, k2tog; repeat to end)

M Rnd 4: *K1, S3, k2, k2tog; repeat from * to end

M Rnd 5: *K1, S3, k1, k2tog; repeat from * to end

M Rnd 6: * RC, S1, LC, k1; repeat from * to end

M Rnd 8: * K3, k2tog; repeat from * to end

Finishing: Cut 12” yarn and thread end through remaining stitches.

 Pull together, and tie off neatly.

(The slipped stitch to the right on the wave may not stand tall, gently elongate (tug) with the tip of a needle to even out the tension.)

Here are photos of the process:

I selected yarn and needles.  Worked the brim with size US#6, 12", and knitted onto US#7, 16"circular needles.

 

I worked the SSWave pattern twice, and measured the hat.  Not quite tall enough so I worked rounds 1-6 again.

 

I kept some the markers available as I decreased, and knitted onto the double pointed needles.

 

I worked the crown.  I am ready to cut the yarn, thread through, and tie off. 

Yes, I knitted two SS Wave hats. 

And we had fun at the beach.
